Therapy
is a safe place to explore concerns, challenges and goals so you can find understanding, clarity and peace

A "top down" approach to therapy is any approach that involves the mind.  By exploring thinking patterns, core beliefs and developing insight into problems, you can better navigate challenges, transitions and complex emotions.

Developing insight is an important step in the therapy process-- a little bit like organizing an old junk drawer.   Initially, it can feel overwhelming.  You've kept everything tucked away for so long, you don't even know whats in there any more.  By sorting through it, we can figure out what to toss, what to keep and how to keep it organized so you have all the tools you need.

Talk therapy offers the opportunity to understand yourself and your life experiences more fully and through a lens of compassion and validation.  Together, we'll process your family system, personal history and any defining past or present experiences to connect the dots, break free of old patterns, find your strengths and learn healthier ways of interacting with yourself and the world around you.

Somatic

Somatic therapy explores how the body expresses deeply painful experiences and applies mind-body techniques for healing

A "bottom up approach" is anything that integrates the body into the therapeutic dialogue.  Somatic therapy, or body-oriented therapy, recognizes the intricate connection between mind and body and encourages you to pay attention to those cues.  Sensations in the body are like a weather vane, they communicate your emotional experiences and how to navigate them safely.

Doing this work quite literally changes the neural pathways in your brain so you can access a state of calm more regularly.  It also offers an avenue to reconnect with yourself lovingly and develop deeper awareness of the mind-body connection.  Using these skills provides the opportunity to bridge insight into action, allowing you to navigate hard experiences in real time and use regulating coping skills.  Not only will you understand your challenges, you'll understand how to move through them.

By incorporating practices like mindfulness, grounding techniques, breath work, self compassion, restorative yoga and lifestyle wellness, you'll have the opportunity to connect with your whole, embodied, balanced self.
